The Hook

Twenty-one laps. One narrow street circuit. Two kilograms of sweat. And one chat-window exchange that ended with another driver kindly questioning my IQ. After roughly a year mostly away from competitive sim racing, St. Petersburg was a brutal, sticky, slightly absurd, and ultimately glorious return to the iRacing Porsche Cup.

Qualifying

Two flying laps. I knew I’d have one decent one and one I’d want to forget — I got both, in the wrong order. Lap one was on pace. Lap two I overdrove the rhythm completely. Final: 1:14.365, P15 of 18.

Not the result I wanted, but honest. This was a track I’d bought literally this week, and a driver coming back after roughly a year mostly off iRacing. The seat-time gap shows immediately on a circuit this unforgiving. There’s no margin around the walls at St. Pete — and no fast way to fake racecraft you haven’t practiced.

The Race

Cold tires, narrow walls, and seventeen other Porsches who’d all rather not finish their first stint by the airport runway. Lap one I held back deliberately — several incidents broke out ahead, exactly the kind of opening lap a street circuit promises and reliably delivers.

Then lap three, turn one. Braking zone. I committed to my line. The driver behind committed to my line as well — only with his front bumper firmly on my rear. Off into the runoff, then back on track. The chat window lit up shortly after with a generous character assessment of my driving abilities. Apparently I was the problem. Apparently.

From there I made a decision: this race wasn’t going to be won by defending. Two or three cars came past with no resistance from me. Better a clean overtake than a damaged car and a “DNF” next to my name. Pure survival mode for the first half.

Once the field thinned and the tires came in, the rhythm started returning. Best lap of the race fell on lap 18 — a 1:13.314, more than a second faster than my qualifying time. Same car, same track, same driver — just one with race pace finally coming back. Crossed the line P13 from P15. Two positions gained, 21 of 21 laps, two incident points. Running. I’ll take it.

Final Thoughts

P13 isn’t a trophy lap. That’s not what I came back for.

What this race confirmed: the love of racing is back. More than before. The D-BOX motion grinding through every bump on the front straight, the Cubic Belt Tension working overtime in every braking zone, the heat building up under the rig with only my manual mini-AC fighting back — it felt like real racing. Two kilograms of sweat says I committed.

What needs to change: practice sessions before race day. Qualifying pace was a full second off my eventual race best — same car, same track. That isn’t talent, that’s rust. Same fix for racecraft — only more races bring that back.

For now I’m hooked again. Next race week: more prep, qualifying further forward, less defending in the dirty air at the back.

Welcome back, Porsche Cup.
