In my final race of the iRacing GT Sprint Simucube Series, I took on the legendary Watkins Glen circuit in the McLaren 720S GT3 Evo. It was an unforgettable race with plenty of twists and turns—both on the track and in the competition. With a Strength of Field of 2479, I started as Car #9 in P11 and pushed through to finish in P8. From the very start, it was clear this race would be packed with intense moments.
The Challenge of Racing in the Rain
While it wasn’t raining at the beginning, the track was still slick from an earlier downpour, which made for nerve-wracking driving in every corner. After my pit stop, the rain returned, adding yet another layer of challenge to an already demanding race. ABS and traction control were lifesavers here, but every curb and puddle was a potential hazard. I had to manage the car carefully, knowing one wrong move could send me spinning out.
Mid-Race Drama
Most of the other drivers kept it professional, and even the start went smoothly despite my starting position in the middle of the pack. But three laps from the end, things got tense. Christoph, a fast driver in Car #2, suddenly reappeared in front of me. Christoph had pitted for slicks, which weren’t ideal for the damp track, and ended up holding both me and another driver, Gabor, back. Christoph’s decision to block us slowed me down enough for Gabor to catch up, and he managed to overtake me cleanly in a fair move. But with Christoph still blocking, things became chaotic.
In the next corner, I made a critical error. I braked a bit too late, made contact with Gabor, and spun him out. It was an unfortunate mistake, and I felt it was only right to let him take back his position. He crossed the line in P7, while I finished just behind him in P8.
Racing in Full Motion
Even with the rain and mid-race drama, this race was an incredible experience thanks to my D-Box Full Motion Simulator setup. The way the ABS and traction control feedback comes through in this system makes it feel like real-world racing. Coupled with my 57-inch monitor, Simucube 2 Ultimate Wheelbase, hydraulic Simtag Ashley pedals, and a replica 720S GT3 wheel, the entire setup is pure immersion—just like being in the car.
